Swiss online gambling limit proposals draw criticism

In Switzerland, a leading information and communications technology federation has called for caution as the lower house of the nation’s legislature begins considering new measures that would introduce limits on foreign online gambling websites.

According to a report from the Telecompaper news service, the Swiss Association For Information, Communications And Organization Technology has warned that the introduction of any kind of Internet barriers could jeopardize online security and the nation’s digital economy.

The group reportedly explained that the measures being considered by the National Council would be largely ineffective as most modern browsers offer users the ability to override network locks while warning that such processes would be inaccurate and “almost inevitably” lead to the blocking of uninvolved sites or providers.

The Swiss Association For Information, Communications And Organization Technology reportedly also argued that network locks change the addresses of data packets, which mirrors the behavior of cyber criminals and makes it even more difficult to detect cybercrime.

Finally, the federation reportedly declared that web locks moreover deter international companies from marketing their services to Switzerland as free access to the Internet is widely considered a major draw-card for investment.
